Austin College Clips MU Tribe, 71-63 Michita Falls Kerord News Page 8 THURSDAY March 5, 1959 Kangies Earn Berth in NAIA Cage Tourney s8: By KENNETH ESTES Record News Sports Writer SHERMAN, Texas--Austin College's Kangaroos, spurred by a tremendous scoring burst in the final five minutes of play, swept past the Midwestern University M9 Indians, 71-63, before 1500 screamn ing fans here Wednesday night, to gain a berth in the NAIA me: tournament in Kansas City. The Kangaroos broke open a tight game in the dying minutes of the Northern Zone contest as they stretched a 52-51 lead to 62- 51 bulge in a span of two minutes. Only 36 field goals were made by both clubs in the hectic test, as MU held a 19-17 edge, but from charity alley, Austin College outshot the Tribe, 37-25. Strangely enough, every member of the Kangaroo squad sank as many or more free throws than 00 he did field goals. $3 Charley Smith, Austin's 6-6 cenHI ter, was the ramrod of the KanJ.u garoos' late surge as he scored TAM points in the final five minutes.

Smith was also the Kangies' leading scorer with 20 points. The late Austin surge was due partly to the loss of Bob Myers of the Indians via the foul route with five minutes remaining. Dimunitive Charley Horton and Flatt also succumbed to the five foul rule. The lead changed hands 11 times and the score was deadlocked at half, 27-27, one of the 13 times the tally was knotted in this crucial outing. The win boosted the Kangies' seasonal mark to 15 wins and 13 losses, and gave them a second consecutive trip to Kansas City.

Last year Austin was eliminated in the first half by Plattfield, Teachers, 77-59. Midwestern outshot Austin from the field, connecting on 19 of 60 attempts for 31 per cent, while the Kangies hit 17 of 60 for a meager 29 per cent. Myers of the Indians was the game's leading rebounder, grabbing 10 off the boards, but Austin held a slim 44-43 edge in that department. Horton paced the Indians with 13 points and Flatt and Wayne Davis added to the Indians' offensive with 12 and 10 points each. Robert Landolt, Austin's leading scorer for the season, backed up Smith with 17 points.

The loss was the Tribe's 12th against 15 victories. The Indians never led by more than two points while Austin held 1 11-point bulges twice, 62-51 and 64-53. Saxon Nabbed For Burglary NEW YORK (AP) -Johnny Saxton, 28, former world's welterweight boxing champion, was arrested Wednesday night in a Queens burglary that netted only $5.20 in cash.

Police said the onetime Negro ring ace told them he made 000 during his professional career but now is broke and owes $16,000 in taxes. U.S. Army Lt. Richard Gatehouse, 24, saw a man on the fire escape of his Jamaica apartment house and called police. Patrolmen seized the man after he had jumped to the ground from the second floor of the building in an attempt to escape them.

The officers said Saxton admitted the Jamaica burglary and others previously in Queens. A small valise was recovered from some bushes, where police claimed Saxton threw it. In it were $5.20 in cash and a $50 fur cape. A native of Newark, Saxton won the welterweight title from Kid Gavilan in Philadelphia in 1954, and lost it the following year in Boston to Tony Demarco. Saxton regained the title from Carmen Rasilio in 1956 but lost it to the same fighter later that year.

Powell Scores Stunning Upset Over Valdez MIAMI BEACH, Fla.

(AP) Charley Powell, of San Diego, a 4-1 underdog, scored a stunning upset when he stopped Nino Valdes, 224, of Havana in the eighth round of their (scheduled 10-round fight Wednesday night. Referee Cy Gottfried stopped the fight when the bloody and bewildered Cuban went down for the third time. One of Powell's blows draped Valdes over the middle strand of the ropes. Valdes, semi-hysterical in his dressing room afterward, claimed he was only knocked down twice in the final round, and he believed the bout was stopped because he was down three times. Gottfried admitted the Cuban was knocked down only twice, said Valdes fell the third time and he stopped the fight because Valdes was obviously exhausted.

Valdes, looking too heavy at 224, took a good mauling through most of the battle, which ended in 2:03 of the eighth round. Albie Booth Laid to Rest NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Albert J. (Albie) Booth was laid to rest Wednesday in a grave near Yale's athletic fields where he gained undying fame 30 years ago. Services for the 51-year-old Booth, whose exploits in football and baseball have become legendary, were conducted the way he lived-as simple as possible.

He died of a heart attack early Sunday in New York City. There was a Solemn High Mass of Requiem in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in nearby Hamden. The church was crowded to its 350-person capacity with family, neighbors, former teammates, and leaders of Yale and New Haven. Burial was in St.

Lawrence cemetery in brisk sunny weather. There were tears, too, for "Little Boy Blue," the fabulous 145- pound, 5-7 athlete. From near Booth's final resting place one can see the top of famed Yale Bowl and the baseball field. The sight recalled probably the two greatest moments in Booth's great athletic career. There was the October day in 1929 when young Booth, as a football quarterback, zoomed to fame by tearing favored Army apart.

He kicked and passed and ran Yale to a 21-13 victory, His name became a household word. Then there was the June day in 1931, just before graduation, when his home run with the bases loaded licked arch rival Harvard 4-3. There were no eulogies Wednesday but one of the mourners, Col. Earl Blaik, recently retired Army football coach who knew Booth as a "great football player and official," offered this tribute to newsmen: "Booth's whole life exemplified the finest in the tradition of athletics."
