What is biodiversity succession? ›

Ecological succession is the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time. Gradually, these communities replace one another until a “climax community”—like a mature forest—is reached, or until a disturbance, like a fire, occurs.

The succession takes place due to changes in the physical environment and population of the species. The succession is mainly of two types: primary and secondary succession. The ecological succession occurs in the five stages viz nudation, invasion, competition and coaction, reaction and stabilisation.

The stages of primary succession include pioneer microorganisms, plants (lichens and mosses), grassy stage, smaller shrubs, and trees. Animals begin to return when there is food there for them to eat. When it is a fully functioning ecosystem, it has reached the climax community stage.

Primary Succession is when a new area of land is populated by a group of species for the first time. This land is barren with no soil. The only species that could survive in this barren land are what are called Pioneer Species. These species are low maintenance- requiring minimum resources to survive.

Primary succession occurs when new land is formed or bare rock is exposed, providing a habitat that can be colonized for the first time. For example, primary succession may take place following the eruption of volcanoes, such as those on the Big Island of Hawaii. As lava flows into the ocean, new rock is formed.
